Ugh [Dec. 26th, 2014|06:46 pm]

[Current Mood |soresore]

I feel like crap today. Luckily, I was fine yesterday and the day before. My twin, who moved out in July, spent the night Wednesday night (and brought her dog), so we had a lovely family Christmas. My parents gave me a check, figuring that'd be easier than trying to figure out what I'd want (I wasn't sure what I wanted!). A friend gave me a shirt that said 'I'm not lazy. I'm energy efficient'. XD She also gave me a scarf and socks. My twin gave me a $15 iTunes gift card. I haven't bought anything yet, but I redeemed it at least. Another friend and I are going to try to arrange to see each other sometime soon so she can give me my birthday/Christmas present.

In terms of my Master's degree, I bombed my November class (just flat-out froze and stopped doing the work), but passed my December class. My thesis class is scheduled for February and I'll re-take the November class in May (which I WILL pass!). I applied for graduation, which is on hold until I complete those last two classes. The commencement ceremony will be in June and my diploma will be conferred in July (at the earliest, given that I have that class in May). This is also means that I likely won't start teaching until August of 2016. When I mentioned that to my twin, she suggested that I consider substitute teaching. That way I have experience as a teacher (not a tutor) to put on my resume when I actually apply to community colleges for teaching positions. I can't do anything at the moment, since all the schools are on Christmas break, but I will contact the local school district about applying to be a substitute teacher in the new year.

I'm sorry I didn't do Christmas fics this year. My brain was mush from working on stuff for my class this month. I hope everyone had a great holiday and has a happy new year.

Last month... wasn't that great for me. It was my own fault. I knew I had a class coming up, but I wasn't mentally prepared for it. For some reason, I just COULD NOT focus. I didn't post on the message boards like I should have, I didn't do the assignments. I just... crashed. Really bad. I don't have any reason for it, either. I wasn't sick. There weren't any family emergencies. I just screwed up. Bad. I knew I was going to flunk, so I contacted my advisor about re-taking the class and she said I wouldn't be able to until next May. And I'd have to pay for it out of pocket. Financial aid only pays for taking it once. I don't have a choice, though. It's REQUIRED to get my degree. However, I can still take the thesis/portfolio class in February, which she'd already put me in, so yay! I'm taking another class now and I'm keeping up better with it. I'm determined that I'll only screw up the one class.

In other news, life has been quiet. The new expansion for World of Warcraft came out and I already got one character to 100. My second one is sitting at 94(?) and I have a couple others sitting from 92 to 90. I also ordered Dragon Age: Inquisition and that has been fun, if a little heartbreaking. Well, so has Warlords of Draenor because you meet a lot of people that you've met in an earlier expansion, but they're not the same. And early access for the new Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion starts today. They'll be my rewards for working on homework. :D

I'm still around. I wish I could say that I've been too busy to post, but that would be a lie. I've been playing a lot of Star Wars: The Old Republic. And writing fic for it. Read them here if you're interested. I started my next history class today, after a two-month leave of absence. My next class is next month, and then start on my thesis. My plan is to finish it in time to graduate in May so I can start applying for teaching jobs ASAP. For those of you who don't remember, today is umbralillium's birthday and tomorrow is mine. The past few years, I've offered to write gift fics for anyone who wishes to make a request that I would then post on my birthday. I'm not sure if I'll be able to manage anything this year, but go ahead and make a request in the comments anyway. I'll see if I can distract my muse from SWtOR long enough to write something else. I'll try to remember to post something in December offering gift fics for Christmas.

I managed to tweak my back while stretching of all things today and it's still not 100% despite going to the chiropractor. I'm hoping a good night's sleep will help. Having a tweaked back on my birthday is NOT my idea of fun.

I've just been incredibly distracted playing Star Wars: The Old Republic. Also writing ficlets based on my experiences with the game. Given that school tends to smush creativity, I was very glad to write anything at all. Apart from that, life has been pretty quiet for me. I hope everyone else's life has been going pretty well.

mylodon, I turned on Bedknobs and Broomsticks and the scene with the home guard reminded me of Dad's Army. I blame you for it because I wouldn't have known about it at all if not for you. :-P

I passed World History with a higher grade than I thought I would. *wipes forehead* Whew! On the second week of my other class. Need to sit down and do the reading. *makes a note*

None of my stories were accepted for publication. Honestly, it's kind of a relief, but things have gotten a little hectic around here lately.

The reason for that is my twin and her friend got the apartment, so we spent last Monday moving them in to the apartment. Most of the time since then has been spent prepping and painting my new room. It's beautiful! I used a steam cleaner on it last night and we're letting it dry out today and tonight. Hopefully by tomorrow, it'll be dry enough for us to move me in. It'll be nice to have my own room again! With three daughters in the family, we've all had to share more than we care for. Heck, I was sharing before I was even born! ;-)

On top of that, I ordered a new computer and it arrived yesterday afternoon (otherwise the steam cleaning would have happened then. *sheepish*). It's so much faster than my old one, better graphics, and lots more memory. Dad, Mom, and umbralillium all commented on how big the tower is. Yes, thank you for pointing that out for me. I hadn't noticed. :-P

Yep, still alive and kicking. I finished world history, but don't have a grade yet. The teacher gave me an extension for the final paper, so it took awhile. I start the second half of modern European history on July 7th, so a week and a half. Then I don't have another class until November. I've applied for a leave of absence to last from August to October so my financial aid won't be affected. I'll have another class in December, then my thesis (need to look when the next one is offered after December), and then I'll be done! Next step after that will be to find a teaching position. Shouldn't be a problem.

On the writing front, my Nanny fanfic clocked in at 35k+ words. Twelve chapters plus an epilogue. I finished my original story and submitted it and two others for publication. The editors are going through the submissions now, so I'm hoping to find out soon-ish. I have ideas for other stories, both fanfiction and original, but those will have to take a backseat to school.

My twin may be moving out soon. She and one of her friends looked a two-bedroom apartment on the same block as their church and it is amazingly spacious. They'd have plenty of room for themselves and their pets (one dog and two cats), and space to entertain friends. The rent is practically a steal, so they're totally going for it. They'll get the paperwork to fill out tomorrow, which they'll do and send right back. If it goes through, I'll get my twin's old room and umbralillium will get the room we currently share all to herself. I'm hoping it will go through and not just because it'd mean my own room. My parents aren't too thrilled with the idea of her moving out, but it's going to happen eventually. I'm definitely planning on it once my finances are in the right shape for it.

I'm still around. Just been busy with schoolwork and writing. I managed to pass my previous class, but only barely. I don't know what happened at the end there. I was just so tired and blah. I couldn't focus. This month is world history and I'm writing about the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Very depressing reading. I have no class next month, and then modern European history from 1800's onwards in July. Then two more classes after that and my thesis and then I'll be done! *falls over*

My Nanny fanfic is over 30k words and I'm finally approaching the end. Work on my original story is going a little slower, but it's coming along. I still need to get back to my novel. Maybe once my schooling settles down. I'd eventually like to get a doctorate, but that'll have to wait until I pay off some of my student loans.

I hope today is a blessed day for everyone. If you don't believe, I hope you have a nice day at least.

Update on my class situation: I'll be doing a history class as independent study next month. It's world history, so that's pretty wide open. I'll have June off from classes, and then go back to class in July for the second half of modern European history. After that, I have two 'practicum classes' which will basically just help gear me up for my thesis. Then I'll just have my thesis to work on and then I'll be done. *falls over* Kind of wish I could learn like in the Matrix where all the knowledge can just be downloaded into your brain. *sigh*

I've managed to continue writing. I have an original story I'm working on, but it's fanfic that's eating my brain. It's for The Nanny, but the main focus is on Niles and CC. In this case, it's a college AU that was meant to be a short little thing and is no over 10k words. How'd that happen? I have a friend who's been kind enough to let me bounce ideas off her and read what I've written and just cheer me on.

Take care, everyone!

If it all goes as I hope it will, I'll have my degree sometime this fall. Then I can start applying for adjunct positions and finally get started teaching.

Creative writing has kind of taken a backseat to academic writing, though not completely. Durinson's Coffee, the story I wrote for umbralillium has grown to 21 chapters and I have no idea how many more it's going to have. I also started a fic series where the dwarves can change genders almost at will. I've written five stories for it so far.

Just trying to be more regular about updating. A lot of my fellow Tolkien fans really liked Desloation of Smaug, so I'm looking forward to it even more. I also watched the 50th Anniversary episode for Doctor Who and the story was good, but I would have liked more of the other Doctors than archive footage. Naturally, I watched the mini-sode with Paul McGann eagerly. Much as I respect and admire John Hurt, I'd have liked to see Paul in his place instead. I understand the reasoning, but still--!

Naturally looking forward to the new season of Sherlock. I'm a little sad that fans seem determined to hate Amanda Abbington for playing Mary Morstan without even giving her a chance. :-( Let's see what they do with her character before hating on her.

No takers for the Christmas/Yule drabbles. If you'd like to request one, comment on this post with fandom, pairing/character, and prompt.

Yes, I'm still around. I spent most of October and November focused on my classes. Got Bs in both and now have a break. In time to start working again, which will probably continue until next May. Then, hopefully, I'll finish my degree by next September or October, and then start applying for adjunct teaching positions, either online or at an actual campus. No one asked for a hobbit!birthday drabble in October, which was just as well, since all the reading pretty much fried my brain for fannish stuff. Since I have this month off, however, I'll gladly write Christmas/Yule drabbles for people. Just comment with a fandom, character or pairing, and a prompt and I'll do my best to oblige by the 25th.

I had submitted a story for a holiday anthology back in October and it was turned down. I have one submitted for a WWII anthology with a deadline at the end of the month, so I won't find out if it's been accepted until next year. *bites nails* I've had this story floating around in my head for years and the anthology call gave me the impetus to get off my duff and write it. I'm still working on my novel, though school kind of short-circuited my brain for a bit there.

Since my last post, I've watched Pacific Rim and Wreck-It Ralph and have come to like them very much. I'm even ficcing for Wreck-It Ralph, though that's kind of stalled at the moment. I'm hoping that me or my younger sister or brother will get the extended edition of the Hobbit for Christmas. I've seen clips of the extra scenes and I'm really excited for them. I'm also looking forward to the Desolation of Smaug or the Desolation of Feels as some people are calling it on Tumblr.

One of our cats may have tumors in her stomach. My younger sister noticed blood in her bile right before Thanksgiving and I've sometimes noticed blood in the litter box before, though there was no way of knowing which cat left it (we have four). So, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, Mom and my sister took the cat to the vet and he felt masses in her stomach and, when he took a stool sample, he found blood there, too. The tests to determine what's wrong costs about $400 and we didn't have that kind of money. So the vet gave us some antibiotics to give the cat and a few shots. Since she's my sister's cat, she wants to do the tests anyway, because the shots and medicine were just a stopgap measure. She wants to know just how bad it is so she can decide what to do next.

Sorry to end on such a downer note, but the rest of the family is fine at least. Dad retired in October and loves the fact that he doesn't have to go out in the rain anymore. One of his friends, also retired, joined us for Thanksgiving. He and another of Dad's friends have been invited to join us for Christmas as well. I hope all is well for everyone and that the holiday season isn't getting you down.

Still around a kicking. Just been focused on school. SO MUCH READING. That's what I get for doing a history degree online. I got an A in my class, which was History and Theory. Working on Early Modern Europe (1500-1800). We have to do a literature review and my usual areas of interest won't work: early America and World War II. So, I was kind of torn between witchcraft and early feminism. I've pretty much settled on feminism. Most of the witchcraft articles I found were focused on Africa. *headdesk* I don't know if I'll focus on a specific person for feminism or what. I have to wade through the articles I found to figure it out. Only need to review three articles by this Saturday. That's on top of the regular reading for class and discussion boards. Next month is early America. Then I get a break for December. I'll be relieved for it, I'm sure.

In other news, my birthday is at the end of the month! I'll be turning 30, eep! As per usual, I'll happily write drabbles for my friends as hobbit!birthday presents. You can check my writing journal to see what fandoms and pairings I'll write: feline_artistry. umbralillium always gets a birthday one from me, since her birthday is the day before mine. :D

I also got sucked into Diablo III. *sheepish* Since I signed up for a year's subscription to WoW so I could get into the MoP beta, I also got a free copy of Diablo III and I finally decided to see what it's about. I made it through the first two Acts in less than a week. The storyline is very compelling and I've come up with a backstory for my character already that's probably nothing like the in-game backstory. I won't change my mind on her backstory, though. So there. :D

And the remodel on our house has been continuing. The bathroom that started it all is almost finished. The painting needs to be finished, and the master bathroom is being redone as well, and then laminate flooring in the living, dining, and family rooms as well as the hall. Last of all will be a new fence along the back property line. We have a brick wall to the west and vinyl fencing was put in to the east a few years ago. The new fence will be vinyl. It'll be such a relief when it's all done. With workers here almost every day, we introverts don't get much of a chance to recharge.

I talked to both Financial Aid and Student Accounts since my previous post. By the time I actually got hold of an actual person and not an answering service, my student file was marked as eligible for financial aid, so I didn't have to worry about making a minimum payment and I could go ahead and start my class. And, after I'd been told it could take a couple weeks to get my financial aid, I got a message informing me that I've received my financial aid and just had to sign a Master Promissory Note, which I did ASAP. I nearly lost my financial aid at CalBaptist because I didn't know about that sucker. I started my first class today and I have all of my books on Kindle, so I've been having fun highlighting and making notes. AND they transfer between devices, so my highlighting shows up on my phone and vice versa (haven't figured out how to highlight on my phone yet, but my bro says he can on his, which is the same model as mine).

I haven't mentioned this, but our house is getting a makeover. It started out with Ann wanting to paint our bathroom, like we did Mom and Dad's last year. Dad knocked out part of one wall and realized that there was more damage to it by mold/rot than he could deal with. So Mom called in a company that specializes in this sort of thing and, essentially, there was a lot of mold in there because that bathroom has no windows to vent steam after our showers and the fan gets clogged with dust. So the parts of the walls with mold needed to be knocked down completely, which means the bathroom is going to be remodeled and with the loan Mom and Dad can get from the company, all of the popcorn ceiling is being removed (except for the closets) and retextured. The rooms that we haven't painted yet are going to be painted, and we'll have new flooring put in all through the house (vinyl in the main areas with carpet in the bedrooms and tile in the kitchen, laundry room, and bathrooms). Most of the painting is done now. They're now just doing the doors, and then they'll be done. The crew even came out yesterday because they want to get the job done. Because of where they were working, the whole family spent most of yesterday in the living and dining room.

My second story has been published! You can find it here. The one that I was working on that's due by Sept 15th has been finished and sent to my first readers.

I've been very bad about keeping up with my LJ. Tumblr and WoW keep me pretty well distracted. *sheepish* The anthology I mentioned whose deadline was July 31st in my last post? That's been changed to December 31st. *headdesk* I have to wait several more months to hear about that one. I haven't really written anything for the story due on September 15th and the one that was due on September 30th has been scrapped. Or at least pushed so far back that it's not even on the schedule. There is an open call that'll be taking place the first week of October, so I'm going to submit something to that. In the meantime, I've been poking at my novel which has now hit 50,000 words! Whoo! I have another story in an anthology coming out on the 27th or 28th (I can't remember which just now). The original release date was the 9th, but it got shuffled back. I'm not sure why.

As far as school goes, I'm still on schedule to start my classes next month. I can buy two of my books as eBooks, so I'm going to do that and the third one is about $30, so that won't be too much of a problem. My plan is to buy as many eBook versions of my textbooks as I can to cut down on the number of hardcopies I'm left with at the end of the class. I intend to get a tablet that I can load them onto, but that'll have to wait a bit. I'm hoping to get back to working soon. At least it'll get me out of the house.

So that's the news from me. Anyone have anything they'd like to share?

The deadline is July 31st, so I won't know until after then if it's been accepted. *sigh* There's another call for a different company entirely that's due September 15th that I'd really like to write something for. I have an idea for it already. We'll see if I can get it written in time. And there's another one for the same company that the one I just finished that's due September 30th that I have two ideas for. Not to mention my novel that I started last September. Why, no, I don't have a lot of ideas. What are you talking about? *innocent look*

I got a message from National yesterday informing me that my waived courses now show up on my Academic Advisement Report (AAR), which keeps track of the courses I need for my degree and whether they're finished, in progress, or still need to be taken. So, just for the hell of it, I checked the report. It showed that I'd completed all of the undergrad courses except one. And, my advisor had changed. So, I e-mailed both the old advisor and the new one to find out what's going on. Turns out my old advisor had been promoted (yay for her!) and her students had been transferred to the new one. I'd asked in my e-mail to her if there was any way around that one undergrad class because it's only offered online in November and May. If I need to take it before I start my grad classes, I won't be able to start my coursework until November. The new advisor said it looked like that particular class had been overlooked and she submitted a request to have that requirement waived along with the others. Which means I'll still be starting my Master's program in September. Cue HUGE sigh of relief. I'd have been willing to do an independent study or something in August to get that requirement out of the way if I had to, but this is better. I'm pretty sure one of my undergrad courses at CalBaptist fulfilled that requirement already.

There's one in particular that I have to take first and that's only offered every three months: March, June, September, and December. So I can't start until September. *headdesk* If I'd just started the ball rolling sooner or kept on top of things a bit better... *sigh* Ah well. Wow, over a month since my last update. Oops? *sheepish smile* Everything's good. The writing's coming along (almost halfway to the minimum wordcount on the story I'm writing for an anthology call).

I'm definitely going to be taking classes at National University, hopefully starting next month. A slight problem is that I have to choose between studying the history of modern Europe from 1500 to 1789 or from 1789 to the present. Why must I choose at all? I also have to choose between US history from the beginning to the Civil War or from the Civil War to the present. It probably doesn't make sense to non-history geeks, but I don't want to choose at all! *wails* On the plus side, I could still take all four and have two of them count for my electives. That would only leave me two other electives, though. One of which would be good for me to take since it'd help me be able to use technology to make lectures cool and interesting once I start teaching. But I'm not sure if I'll go that route. I wonder if they'd mind if I took extra classes? I want to study ALL THE THINGS! *pout*

I've already decided which of the four will be the non-electives. I'll let you guys try to guess which those are. ;-)

So, yes, much geekery to be had and I posted a couple fanfics on feline_artistry in case anyone was interested. One is for The Avengers and the other is for Sherlock.

My mom suggested looking at doing my degree online, so I applied to National University and the admissions counselor who followed up on my application is already talking about figuring out my schedule of classes. *bemused* Sounds good. Since my bachelor's is in history and political science, the master's in history will only take about 11 months. So I could be teaching college courses much sooner than if I'd been accepted at UCR. Who knew?

Thanks to everyone who has ever offered me encouragement for my writing and my schooling. Thanks to the people who cheered me on and helped me figure out why a story wasn't working. Just thanks to everyone here, past and present.

I SOLD ANOTHER STORY!

You can read the details at devin_wood or here. I also post about writing progress on my current projects and even ideas I've had.

No word from UCR, though I sent an e-mail asking about how long it takes to make decisions about graduate applications. No response to that yet.

Just haven't had much to post about. However, at the end of March, I did get word that an official release date has been established for the anthology my story is going to be in: Death and the Detective will be released on May 11, 2013. Squee!

I've also been reconnecting with old friends from the Potter fandom through the LotR/Hobbit fandom. That's been a trip. :D

I don't think I mentioned this, but we'd been having trouble with our internet connection for a few months. AT&T, our ISP, wasn't really doing anything to resolve the issue, so my parents switched to Time Warner. That was put in last Saturday and the connection has been more reliable since then. However, my wireless adaptor for my computer doesn't seem to be connecting this morning (I'm on Mom's computer while she's at work). *headdesk* I just want our Internet to settle down. We don't need the stress of fighting with it right now. *grumble*

No word on my application to UCR. I'm tempted to call them and ask what the hell is going on. They've been 'considering my application' for two months! Ugh.

I got an e-mail from the editor about my story. The anthology it's going to be in won't be published until May now. To tell the truth, I felt a March publication date was pretty ambitious, given the timing of their call for stories. Anyway, she's still doing first-round edits, so she probably won't get back to mine until she's done with those. I can be patient. I have plenty of projects to work on while I wait: a regency femmeslash story, a WWII slash story, and a MMF triad novel that I started back in September.

In school news, UCR is still reviewing applications, so I haven't heard anything about mine. I'm still hoping, but my trip to LA with umbralillium helped me realize that Cal State LA and USC would be feasible (just take the metrolink to the Cal State LA station or take it all the way to Union station and catch the shuttle to USC). Also, Redlands University would be a reasonable commute, so there still schools reasonably close to me if UCR doesn't accept me (though I'd really like to go to UCR).
